What is Name Server?

What is the difference between pointing and transferring a domain?

When a domain name is being transferred, the registrar of the domain name is being changed. While the domain is pointed the registrar stays the same, the name servers the domain is pointed to are changed to those of the hosting company.

The procedure for transferring a domain name is fixed:

  1. The end user contacts the new registrar and proves its identity.
  2. The end user orders the new registrar to transfer the domain name to their service.
  3. The new registrar sets the transfer procedure in motion at the appropriate registry.
  4. The registry contacts the old registrar and asks it if it approves or rejects the transfer, no reaction within five days counts as approval.
  5. The old registrar contacts the end user to confirm the authenticity of this request; no reaction is interpreted as a rejection.
  6. The old registrar approves the transfer at the registry.
  7. The registry completes the transfer by changing the entry in their database.
  8. The new registrar will notify the end user of transfer completion.

After this process, the new registrar becomes one's designated registrar and all correspondence shall be done with them.

The procedure of pointing the domain is the following:

  1. The hosting provider should provide you two /*DNS values*/ nameserver hostnames.
  2. You have to do is to login into your domain registrar provided control panel.
  3. Change /*the DNS of your domain name*/ your domain's name servers to those two /*values*/ hostnames.

You can also ask your domain registration provider to do this for you if you are new to this.

What is DNS propagation?

DNS propagation refers to the process of updating all DNS systems on the Internet. The process where name servers throughout the Internet add new domains and remove expired ones from their records. Usually takes 24-72 hours.

What is WHOIS?

What is Wildcard DNS record?
